Sip The Season: Simmer Pot Magick for the Fall Equinox

Strange Brew… 😉

Greetings, dear meows,

I’ve crafted three fragrant brews for gratitude, fresh beginnings, and a little everyday kitchen witchery that I think you meows are going to enjoy conjuring up!

There’s something about a pot gently bubbling on the stove that makes a kitchen feel like it’s keeping a very delicious secret or at the very least, up to something tasty. Add citrus peel, warm spices, and a little intention, and suddenly an ordinary afternoon feels like the beginning of a ritual.

With the fall equinox approaching, I’m drawn to that pause ( or paws 🐾) between seasons… a chance to appreciate what has grown, acknowledge what has changed, and decide what deserves a place at the table as the evenings grow longer.

And because this is Mystic Meals, I want the magick to taste good, too 😉

These simmer pots begin as actual beverages. I absolutely love teas hot or cold and these are fragrant fruit infusions and spiced cider that perfume the kitchen while they brew. Pour yourself a warm cup on a chilly afternoon, evening, or chill a reserved portion for those days when autumn has arrived on the calendar but apparently missed the weather report memo as it is in my realm of SoCal, which remains fairly warm most of the year. Nevertheless, tis the season.

A LITTLE INTENTION, A LITTLE COMMON SENSE

For this practice, “cleansing” means a symbolic reset: clearing a counter, taking a breath, and making room for how you want your home to feel. Fragrant steam does not disinfect or purify the air more so that it heightens awareness and awakens the senses.

The rituals below are invitations to create your own meaning, rather than rules from a particular spiritual tradition, which I’m all about. Here, apples can stand for what nourishes us, citrus for a fresh perspective, and warming spices for the comfort we want to welcome. Your associations can be different. That’s the fun part of making the ritual yours. You make up the rules.

Speaking of rules, my first kitchen rule with simmer pots is brew for the cup first.

Use a clean, deep saucepan or cauldron of choice, water, washed produce, and your herbs and spices. Leave essential oils, potpourri, decorative botanicals, crystals, and written wishes out of the pot for now if that’s your vibe with it.

When the brew is ready, strain and reserve everything you plan to drink. You can then add water to the remaining fruit and spices and gently simmer them for fragrance while you stay nearby. Treat that second phase as scent only. Don’t return to it later for another cup.

Never let the pan boil down and reduce, and turn off the heat before leaving the kitchen. A brief brew is enough if anyone in the home is sensitive to fragrance as it is essentially now liquid potpourri. I am, so I try to be mindful of scents being too strong and triggering of the sneezies… 🤧

Refrigerate reserved drinks promptly in small containers, within two hours, or one hour if the temperature is above 90°F. Keep your refrigerator at 40°F or below; don’t leave a batch on the counter to cool all afternoon. We want to capture and retain all of its potency for consumption.

HARVEST HEARTH

Fall in a cup!

Apple, Orange & Cinnamon Cider
A gratitude ritual and a great way to utilize your apple cider and elevate the experience.

Sweet apple, bright orange peel, and just enough spice to make the kitchen smell like somebody has excellent intentions. This is the brew for recognizing the things that have carried you through the season, including the small things that rarely get a round of applause.

Makes: About 3–4 cups, depending on evaporation
Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

3 cups pasteurized, nonalcoholic apple cider or cloudy apple juice
1 cup water
1 small apple, cored and thinly sliced
3 broad strips orange peel, with as little white pith as possible
1 cinnamon stick, about 3 inches long
2 whole cloves

Brew It:

Combine everything in a saucepan. Bring just to a simmer, then reduce the heat and simmer gently, partially covered, for 15 minutes.

Strain the portion you’ll drink, removing all whole spices. Taste before adding sweetener; the cider may be plenty sweet already.

Make It a Ritual:

As you add the apple, name something that nourished you this year. With the orange peel, name a bright moment. With the spices, name a comfort you want to carry forward.

Stir slowly and say:

“I honor what has fed me. I make room for what comes next.”

Serve It:

Warm in your favorite mug, or promptly chill the reserved cider and pour over ice. A splash of sparkling water at serving makes a lighter autumn spritz, and yes… You can add a splash of wine or liqueur to make them a bit boozy. Talk about Strange Brew! 🤘😛🤘

CLEAR THE COBWEBS

Lemon Ginger Rosemary Realness!

Lemon, Ginger & Rosemary Infusion
A letting go ritual that’s as refreshing as it sounds.

Bright, gently peppery, and lightly herbal. Think of this as a fresh page in a mug. Something to sip while deciding what no longer needs to take up quite so much space in your life and daily routine.

Makes: About 3–4 cups
Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

4 cups water
1-inch piece fresh ginger, scrubbed and thinly sliced
3 broad strips lemon peel, avoiding the white pith
1 small culinary rosemary sprig, about 2 inches long
1–2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, to taste
Maple syrup or sugar, optional, to taste

Brew It:

Bring the water, ginger, and lemon peel to a gentle simmer. Partially cover and simmer for 10 minutes.

Turn off the heat, add the rosemary, and steep for 2–3 minutes; remove it sooner if the herbal flavor is strong enough.

Strain, then stir lemon juice and optional sweetener into the drinking portion.

Make It a Ritual:

Clear one small surface while the ingredients are still on the counter. Write down a worry, obligation, or habit you’re ready to loosen your grip on, keeping the paper away from the stove.

As you prepare the brew, say:

“I make space for what supports me.”

After your cup, choose one small action that makes that intention real.

Serve It:

Warm for a brisk evening, or promptly chill and serve over ice with a fresh lemon slice.

Keep the rosemary subtle. It should whisper, not turn the cup into an overly herbaceous experience. Miss Rosemary can be rather dominant in flavor as she likes to take charge.

VELVET DUSK

A Pear of cups…😉

Pear, Cranberry & Vanilla Infusion
A welcome and rest ritual to prepare for the gradual slowdown as the nights get longer and hells fulfill the need to cozy up.

Soft pear and vanilla meet tart cranberry in a rosy brew made for slowing the pace. A little cardamom brings warmth and a comforting spice wth a subtle nod to the upcoming winter season.

Makes: About 3–4 cups
Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients:

4 cups water
1 large ripe pear, cored and thinly sliced
½ cup fresh or frozen cranberries
3 green cardamom pods, lightly cracked
½ vanilla bean, split lengthwise, or ½ teaspoon vanilla extract added after cooking
1–2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup, to taste

Brew It:

Put the water, pear, cranberries, cardamom, and vanilla bean, if using, in a saucepan.

Bring to a gentle simmer, partially cover, and cook for 15–20 minutes, until the pears soften and the cranberries begin to burst.

Gently press the fruit with a spoon, then strain through a fine-mesh sieve. Add the vanilla extract, if using, and maple syrup or honey to the drinking portion.

Taste and adjust; cranberry tartness and pear sweetness vary.

Make It a Ritual:

Let this be an invitation to come home to yourself. Set a place for your cup, put your phone aside for a few minutes, and name one thing you’re allowed to leave unfinished tonight.

Say:

“Warmth belongs here. Rest belongs here. I belong here.”

Rest is the intention, not a promised effect of the ingredients. It won’t make you sleepy, but you will feel a bit more calm and at ease. Content with letting go.

Serve It:

Warm after dinner or promptly chilled over ice. For a shared welcome ritual, pour two cups and invite someone to tell you one good thing from their day. Or leave a cup out as an offering for the ancestors. ✨🖤

LET THE SEASON MEET YOU WHERE YOU ARE

You don’t need a perfect kitchen, an elaborate altar, or a completely transformed life to mark the turning of a season. You celebrate however you see fit. This is my way of nudging you to welcome in the new with a magickal, fun, and whimsical twist.

Sometimes the ritual is washing an apple. Sometimes it’s clearing enough room on the table to sit down. Sometimes it’s remembering that you deserve something lovely even when nobody else is coming over. Take care of yourself. It’s a way to acknowledge all the things you’ve accomplished thus far. Honoring time and your own space.

Let the pot steam. Let the spices open. Let your intentions be simple enough to live with after the cup is empty.

That’s a little kitchen magick for ya, and I hope this encourages you meows to simmer yourself up a bit of a Mystic Meals brew of your own to welcome in the crispness of Autumn, and look forward to rounding out the rest of the year with all the whimsy in your soul.

Until our next bite or brew… Eat well, sip slowly, keep up the shenanigans, and stay spellbound!

Cheers, hugs, and meows!
