Discovering Something New: Apriums!

They’re so pretty!

Greetings, dear meows!

One of the things I enjoy the most about grocery shopping is the thrill of discovery in either trying something out for the first time or finding something new that I’ve never had before. While out and about I stumbled upon what I thought at first were apples because of their red & greenish color, but they were Apriums. A hybrid fruit combo of Apricots and Plums grown in the Central Valley here in California.

So sweet!

Now I’ve had Pluots before, which are another apricot/plum hybrid with more of a greenish skin and tastes more plum like to me. These Apriums on the other hand I found to be quite complex in the best way. Like sipping a glass of wine and tasting all the floral and citrusy notes. The texture itself is very firm and crisp, yet not hard as a rock or dry in any way, and are very easy to eat. It slices really well and I’m already brainstorming on what I’m going to prepare with them. I made a video describing my experience trying them for the first time, so enjoy the shenanigans! 😛

These are a delicious fruit and I love the slight hint of spice from the skin. It’s so subtle yet really makes these little gems an experience to eat. I almost didn’t notice them my first go around at the market. I was pretty much done with my shopping, but decided to take one last browse at the produce section just in case, and there they were.

The point of this here post is encouragement. How making certain choices can lead us to so many new and unexpected things. If I hadn’t circled back to the produce section, I never would have found the apriums. And that’s all it takes to be in the moment of newness. The excitement of possibilities with every decision we make. I feel like those moments become more significant as we go on in life. And how something as simple as finding a new food to try opens you up to a world of new ideas.

My daughter also spotted some prickly pears while I grabbed the apriums and asked to try them. So of course I picked up a couple for her. And again, if I had not gone back, she wouldn’t have seen them either. By the way, prickly pears are really nice! Lots of seeds, though… like tiny watermelon seeds that you can’t chew, but still worth the work. So we were both able to try something new together and can now add them to the list of things we’ve tried and enjoyed.

It’s worth it to steer your ship in a new direction sometimes. You never know who or what you’ll discover about them along the way. Including yourself! You might like it or not, but knowledge and wisdom are still gained to be passed along to someone else by sharing your little moment in time, as I try to do here.

If you see them out in the wild on your travels, give apriums ( and prickly pears 😉 ) a try! And with that dear ones, I leave you with the usual. Until we eat again… Happy cooking. Happy discovering, and bone map the sheep! 😹

Cheers, hugs, & meows!
